I believe 65-66 used the 2.77, no matter which engine. The 3.03 didn't show up until 67. Easy way to tell the difference, 2.77's don't have a syncro first.
I would definitely recommend storing the 3sp and swapping in a 4sp or T5. It'll be more durable either way, and I'm sure you'd appreciate the closer gear spacing

Nice thread. Im also wondering how to tell whether my 3sp is a 2.77 or 3.03. Is there a way to tell without taking the pan off ?

Anyway, go here Mustang Decoder and enter the data from your door plate.
It will tell you what trans you have. There's also a tag on the side of the tranny too but it's hard to access with the tranny in the car.
