Default Need help with car vibration and burning smell

I've got a 1970 351W (all stock). Have had the car for 6 months and it runs great.

Yesterday, after 40 minutes on the road, the car started to vibrate above 40mph and had a bad burning smell.

When I pulled it over, the smell seemed to be coming from the transmission area but thta's just a guess. The temp gauge never changed.

Any idea as to what's going wrong???

thanks

Can you describe the smell?

How many miles on the trans?

What type of Trans - Auto or Stick?

If Auto, have you checked the trans fluid lately? Is it a nice red color, or does it look brown?

If Stick, how many miles on the Clutch/Pressure Plate?

Vibration at high speeds usually mean an alignment is due or your tires are out-of-balance....but that doesnt explain the smell. More info please.

Is your emergency brake on?
I actually did that once and felt like a complete idiot afterwards. Smoke was coming out of the rear wheels and i was like WTF!!!....After i started it back up and started to leave, i noticed the parking brake was on. That will never happen again [&:].

Thanks to everyone for the quick replies

It's an automatic. Checked the transmission fluid last night it it looks good. I don't know how many miles on the tranmission.

The burning smell is wierd....it's definately not a rubber belt or brake. I took it out last night and it ran fine for aabout 20 minutes than the vibration and buring smell came back when I had it on the highway doing 50mph+

Something's definately wrong but I don't know who to take it to (tranmission shop...front end specialist...etc.).

Once again, thanks to everyone for their input.

start with a front end alignment, and get your tires balanced

does it vibrate when your moving slow?

It doesn't make sense that when he's going fast, he begins to feel the vibration and a burning smell. Could his wheel bearings be getting too hot and scoring the metal and causing the vibration?

Can you feel the vibration is the steering wheel? If so, it could be also be two independent issues:

If Yes: wheel balance / front end play / loose lugnut(s) = vibration
If No: wheel balance / drive shaft /loose lugnut(s) = vibration

Smell - engine burning oilat high RPM / Engine oil leak / trans oil leak
