RE: flowmasters are BA!
i have never liked the sound of flowmasters, then again ive only really heard them on newer cars. im planning on re-doing my exhaust (just from the headers back) before hot august nights next year and switching from my flowtech raptors to some cherry bomb glass packs. that would be sweet.

id recommend an h-pipe too...you could probably make your own really easily if your short on change...my car has such a rumble with super40's and an h-pipe. you can hear it on a quiet day driving over 2 miles away (no BS)..

RE: flowmasters are BA!
These are what I'm putting in my 70 this winter;
Auger style muffler fits 3" or 3-1/2" diameter pipe. 11" long. Baffle style. Slips inside 3" or 3-1/2" diameter exhaustpipe.Heard a set of them on a Fairlane with a 351w comparable to mine... sounded like a throatier open header. And they increase hp, from what I've read by the way the air circulates through there and sucks them through like a cyclone (no, not that kind, Baby Bash)... but whatever, it sounded sick and they're only like $15.00 each.

a moroso spiral muffler is the same as those auger style, they are 60 each but a 3" muffler has a 4" or so flow through section so it would have even more flow, i have one on my grandprix. They are the same diameter as a glass pack but not as long.

Just to add my 2 cents.... I played around for months on the exhaust sound. Mainly trying to get rid of the droning sound at crusing speed so longer trips wouldnt get irritating. I found out something pretty interresting. (for the record, its a 66 mustang with a 93 5.0 using Try Y's with a 2 1/2" collector, connected to 2 1/2" magnaflow X pipe, back to flow master super 40's, then to some MAC tail pipes.)
What i found out is that the last foot of exhaust tail pipe (on my configuration) caused 100% of the droning sound. after welding up every conceivable combination, and changing from magnaflow mufflers to super 40's, I found that the best combination was to shorten the tail pipes so that as soon as they turn horizontal again after they travel over my axle, I cut the rest of the tail pipe off, and installed some stainless turn-downs. The great part is they are short enough that I dont need tail pipe support brackets, and this was handy as with the low ride, evey time you would launch the car, the axle would contact the tail pipe. Now if that happens its not a big deal at all.
The sound is pretty mild at idle, with a a newer mustand sound, when you get on it its loud and throaty, and when you lay off the gas to slow down its a mild version of when you just have dumps at the mufflers. (some rumble, but not an ignorant amount of it like with dumps). Best part of all, when you get to the 2500-2800 rpm range where this system use to drone, the droning sound is 100% gone, but when passing a wall, or by a building, your neighbors most definetely do hear it. Now can drive for hours at cruising speed without needing ear protection.
I really think the Magnaflow X pipe makes for the newer sound.
