just got a 67 coupe
well i just got a 67 coupe and i'm looking into beefing up that 289 a little bit for a small amount of change. i know it has 200 hp sae - mildly i'm looking to get around 250 or more but nothing crazy. any junked heads i can get that are worth it? how about intake setup and carb? i heard tossing on a 600cfm or so is fine with these. also how hard is it to put a cd player in it.
sorry for being a retard, never dealt with the older models as i own a 98 GT

Piece of cake for cd player. If you were to wait and save up a lil you could get a complete Edelbrock kit with heads, cam, intake, carb, and whatnot and you definitely have your 250 + I wanna say its like 1800 or so not sure right now tho.I know its more than a lil change but definitely worth the wait and then you know everthing is matched and will work well together.

RE: just got a 67 coupe
well, i was thinking of a edelbrock rpm intake manifold, a 600cfm carb and the xe262 cam with some tri-y headers. how much should i net with that, around 20 hp total or so? - and is the 262 good enough for stock heads so far? i wont begoing extreme with heads yet i suppose

RE: just got a 67 coupe
if your looking to get to about 260 then i would say your on the right track. a carb (600 cfm is enough), intake (thats rpm air gap is a great choice) heads and cam along with some headers/exhaust should put you somewhere in the 230 range. being an owner of a few c code 67's myself, i can tell you that mine werent 200hp at wheels when i got them [8D].

RE: just got a 67 coupe
ah well like i mentioned before i'm a little new to all of this so i didn't know i poked around a bit and saw people were running the 262's or the 268 cams, but for the 268 i need a higher stall? - and are E7 heads better then the stock 289's or? my friend has a set laying around and i was wondering.
and does anyone know where i check to find the gear ratio ? someone told me mines a 2.79 or something??

Im not sure the year models they are on but do a search for gt 40 heads.
They were stock on v8 explorers in the 90's
Still a bargain in the bone yards.
Dont forget to plug the cross over ports on the heads or youll have a leak you cant locate!
And also you can pick up inserts for the heads the gt 40 are too big so these just thread in and give you the right threads to use you brackets to mount up to.
I have a set on a 289 .30 over with a carter 625 and performer intake.
Same specks as a x303 just not a roller cam and 1.6 roller rockers
Its a handful of torque fun little engine!

i'll look for the GT40's - i wanna be somewhere in maybe a high 13 low 14 range with this while keeping costs down as much as possible, and maybe add a little bit of juice later - it depends. how stout are these on juice? 100 hp ok?

the stock pistons are the 1st concerns on nos.
Mines has a paxton I haveny gone the nos route but wouldnt try it on stock pistons.
The stock 5.0 are able to hold it but dont think the old cast ones can for long.

RE: just got a 67 coupe
now your talking. this is what i recomend because its what i did and i love the results. dont waste any money on that 289, just keep it in good running condition so you can drive the car around. save up some money, posi the rearend or get a 9 in. the C4s are great trannys that can handle quite a bit of horse power if built. beef it up a little, kevlar bands / clutches, shift kit, etc. stall converter, thats on you but i wouldnt go higher then 2400 for the build your going for. and for motor, toss the 289 and pick up a302 from a 1987-1990 5.0. the hydraulic cams are old school man, time to go roller. also a plus about the 5.0 is its stock all forged internals, so it can handle way more hp then the 289 can and you dont have to worry about pistons shatteringand what not. here is a little price range (ball park estimate)
new rear w/ gears - around 1,500 (shop around, just gota know where to look)
the 5.0, you can go to a junk yard and pick one up from about 200-500$
its ready to bolt in, just gota change oil pan, drill a new hole for the dip stick and new flex plate, not really too hard.
so with a nice 5.0 in there with some bolt ons and minor mods you can be pushing 350 pretty easy. thats not insane power but its a pretty sweet street car IMO

RE: just got a 67 coupe
well, i have an older 302 that was used as a generator for a while, i don't know the specs as it's at my dads shop. i'll have to check it out on monday - but it's gotta be better then this 289 - though this 289 runs great. with just under 100K on it.
