Default My 68 build thread

Hello all, I started on this forum after buying a 67 coupe with high hopes of bringing it back from the grave. However, it was buried too deep in and I had to give up and call it a loss.

A few days after, I picked up a 68 coupe for $1500 and the 68 looked 110% better then the 67 did. So I am going to start a build thread to document my progress and I welcome any advise or comments on it. I'll probably be turning to you pro's here for a lot of questions I'm guessig, but i'm looking foward to the task. With the winter around the corner here in Canada, the progress is going to be slow untill the sun pops back out in the spring. I'll start by showing the progress so far.

This is how it looked when I bought it. (pic 1 & 2) It needs new floors for the passenger and pretty much a new front end. I found I could salvage most of the engine bay except for the rad support, FR apron and FL apron. So I cut the inner aprons fronts off and the remainder of the rad support. I ordered a whole heap of parts, floor pans, fenders, apron parts, (I ordered complete left and right arpons/frame rail assemblys for the 67 if anyone want to buy them at a good discount. worth $900 for both, i'll sell for $600 as I no longer need them) I recieved 70-something disc brakes from a granada and installed all new front suspension. Here's how it's sitting in my driveway as of Aug. (pic 3) Unfortunatly, this is where the work stopped on the body. I think this winter I will gather interior components and re-do my seats.

The car was a 289 automatic, and I think i'll keep it an automatic, I really don't feel like trying to make it a manual. I'm thinking either a 351C or a brand new crate 302 Boss engine, i'll decide on that after I get most of the body work done and look at the bank accout. Any way, time to get back to work, and i'll try to keep this thread posted as often as I can. Thanks!

Looks like you'vemade some good progress, welcome and good luck.

By the way, did you by foreign repo fenders or ford tooling. How did you find the quality and fit of either.
Thanks.

Over 4 years later, and $23k lighter, I hope you get it together quicker, and cheaper. Also I hope you bought the ford tooling fenders, I did and there were no problems. A friend of mine bought the other and told me the horror story. Good Luck!

I bought my fenders from a supplier in Canada, but they are not OEM ford tooling. I noticed that the headlight assemblies are going to need some minor tweaking to line up the bolt holes, but I don't think it's anything I can't handle. I expected some fits to be less then perfect after spending 39 years flexing and shrinking with the elements. I would like to see a car that hasn't moved any after nearly 40 years of existance. I like to think of myself as a "handy guy" when it comes to cars, and plan to do everything myself. I figure if I can drop a caddy engine into a pontiac fiero, the mustang should not be too much more of a hassle. I guess any words of advise I can give to another mustang newb would be invest in a good box of shim's, because you're going to need them.
