Default Engine Compartment

Call me an idiot but I have randomly heard people talk about "smoothing" their engine compartment. What exactly does this process actually consist of and what is the end result?

Thanks everyone!

Take all accesories off, cleaning, then filling any and every hole and difference in metal height(all panels flat) then remounting only what is neccesary and/or moving whatever possible somewhere else.Just like "shaving" emblems or handles. Its an awesome look.Actually on my to do list.

Kinda like the street rods and most show cars there firewall is flat straight smooth and painted to match the car its not hard to do if you can weld.

The best exampl I've seen is the engine compartment of the '67 convertible Shelby clone at this site.

http://www.reenmachine.com/

the pics show you where he hid all the equipment too. It is one smooth and beautiful engine space.

Thanks to all....I now have a better understanding. JamesW, thanks for that link...definatley shed some light on the topic for me. Its going to get done in my 66' in the beginning of 08' after I get everything media blasted and deal with a few pieces of rust.

Not "smoothed" but just an idea of what can be done with a simple "cleaning" and arranging. I was against the white bay, but now I'm glad we did it in white - not as "gloomy" as a black compartment.
