Viny dye - How durable??

Viny dye - How durable??
One of my projects for this winter isthe upholstery in my 1970 fastback. I am going to get new reproduction upholstery, but I don't want any of the stock colors. I am going with Mach I style seats and I want to go with either all gray seats or black side bolsters with gray inserts. Leaning to all gray. Since gray is not a standard color option I was thinking about buying white upholstery and using vinyl dye to get the color I want. I assume that if it is "dye" it would soak into the vinyl at least a little. That leads me to my questions. How durable is vinyl dye?? How deep does the color go?? How long can I expect it to last in a weekend driver?
Thanks in advance,
John B.

I used duplicolor's vinyl and fabic high prefromance on my trucks seats 4 years ago still looks great.Only tips i can give you is the cleaner the part is before you dye it the better it sticks.

Andrewmp6, How is it holding up on the seats? You know right where you slide into your truck.
One thing I forgot to mention before was that I'm thinking of doing this as a few year interim measure (Hopefully). I would like to eventually either put late model leather seats in, or have the ones I have professionally covered in leather later on. Since I can't seem to be able to find any supplier that sells just the rear seat upholstery, I'm going to have to buy a whole set anyway and figured I could get by a few years by dying the front seat covers. I will leave the rear seat covers just dyed vinyl because it won't get much use anyway. I guess I could always touch up spots that wear if I wind up keeping them longer.
Thanks

The instructions for vinyl dyes I have read talk about cleaning the surface with a particular comercial prep, then spraying the vinyl. Is that pretty much what you did? It sounds like your results are tip-top.

I sprayed my truck seat about 6 years ago. It was Red and I sprayed it black. It was a daily driver for 5 years. Seat still looks good. Can't see any red under there. I just cleaned it really got with a scrub brush and Mean Grean degreaser.
