My gas smell from the back of the car was the rubber tube that connects the fill spout to the tank. Replaced it for about $6. You can also get the gasket that fits on the gas cap itself for $1 which I'd suggest. (I also replaced the rest of the fuel system afterwards for maybe $250, but that was because I'm too picky.)
