vinyl top question
hi there. well im not the best when it comes to cars and was wondering if i should replace the vinyl top on my 67' mustang. Its an old car thats been sitting in my garage for centuries and have decided to restore it. Well ive already made the decision that i want a new vinyl top because my old one is torn and full of holes. This is not a convertable either and the hard top under is rusted. A few friends told me I cant replace the vinyl top because the hard top is rusted. is this true or should i just go through with it? thanks soo much.

RE: vinyl top question
from what ive seen no but the paint that was on the top has been eaten by the rust. but i havent taken it off yet. im just looking at the parts of the vinyl that have peeled off. lets just say there are no holes, would i be able to sand it sown or something?

RE: vinyl top question
The problem with the vinyl top is that it traps moisture between it and the metal which causes the rust you see. You cannot just put another vinyl top over the rust, that will only compound the problem. Your roof will completely rot out, the car's structure will be in jeopardy, the vinyl top will be ruined from the inside out. What you need to do is if you want to put a new one on is clean up that rust and prime and seal the metal to prevent future water from seeping in. If it has holes, uh oh, get out the welder and hopefully it isn't so bad that you can't patch it.
