Default camshaft dur.

whats a good camshaft duration and size to put into a 351c 2v. its a daily driver but it could use a mild cam with the new exhaust. i dont want to go so radical thati have to start changing other things too. so something thats just under the limit and will sound good?
any brand name better over the other?
it hasnt been rebuilt so is it safe to put in a bigger cam? it runs great. no smoke. it should be fine.
thanks!

Cam specs are gonna also be determined by the rest of the build, what you want etc. Duration isn't everything, consider a roller cam, they'll move more air than a flat tappet cam with less duration because they have more agressive ramp rates. You could stick a mild roller cam in that thing that has a bit of an idle, but makes good vacuum and isn't anything radical at all, but it would still make great power.

If you go roller you'll have to drill and tap the lifter valley for the dog bones. I wouln't bother unless you are well prepared and educated on the roller cam and lifter install. I also wouldn't bother unless you plan on going with roller rockers. Do some research on the web, it's not that difficult to learn about roller cams and lifers.

You can get roller conversion kits, but they have special lifters so you don't have to drill/tap, so they cost quite a bit more. But yeah, read up on it if you're considering it. A roller cam/lifter/rocker setup will get you better power and reliability and still within a very streetable rpm range, but will cost more than just a basic flat tappet cam swap. It comes down to what you want out of the car and what you're willing to spend to get there.

i have a cam that has the same specs as the edelbrock performer (204/214 duration 448/472 lift). im soon swapping everything (heads, intake, cam) to the performer RPM series.

not to hijack the OP, but whats it take to do a roller conversion?

I am thinking about putting a comp cams 250H in my 289. I was also wonderisng if it is safe to put a larger cam in an old engine without doing anything to the bottom end?
