Default I need a crash course on fuel mixture adjustment.

I have a '65 coupe with autolite 2100d carb. When I did tune up, plugs were sooty. Wondering I f I am running rich. Can anyone take me thru an adjustment sequence. I have a tachometer. Do I need a vacuum gauge, and if so, where does it hook up to. I appreciate any help. This is my first project car.

You should get yourself the Ford factory repair manual. They have a large section on carburators including stuff on setting the mixture. I'll be adjusting my carb as soon as the rest of the car is ready to go. Just make sure you read everything completely. I usually just skim over the steps, screw things up and have to redo everything after reading how to do it right.

Using a vacuum gauge is one of the best ways to tune a carb.

And in addition to the others:
1. make sure the throttle shaft is not worn out ( it will move laterally (back and forth & not in and out) in the hole if it is) Stop and replace the carb.
2. Run both fuel mixture needles all the way in until they seat (lightly). It should be around 1 1/2 to 2 turns.
3. Turn each ofthe idle screws outward 1 1/2 turns.
4. Start the engine and set the idle to around 700 in neutral or park.
5. Using a tach, rotateeach idle screw, in or out, until the maximum rpm is obtained, reset the idle to no more than 700 rpm if it starts to go higher than 850 or so.
6. Now with the vacumn gauge, tweak each screw until maximum is arrived at it should be in the 18 to 21 inch range and steady.
7. Reset the curb idle in N, if standard, to 550 to 600 or to the sameRPM in drive if an automatic.
8. Don't forget to check /replace the air and fuel filters as part of your tune up.

Before you go indepth - a quick check is to take off the air cleaner and start the engine (warm). Close the throat with your hand - does it stumble or rev? If it stays the same RPM until you almost completely cover it - then it is okay.

If it does change - the steps above are excellent!
