When we did mine, the old one was already busted so it slipped right off and while I was trying to figure out how to place the new one on my dad slipped it on and bam...snug fit.

It has a small pin in the side that holds it on. On my 67 I couldn't pull it out, so I just knocked it into the shaft. After I took the handle off, I hammered the pin out completely.

ah ok..thanks guys...
adam, does the shaft have a hole for the pin to go in? Also during this procedure does one need to pull out the shaft or can I do it with the shaft in place?

cheers

It's a drift pin that holds the handle to the shaft. You can do it while installed in the car but it's much easier if taken out. You'll need to use the same sized flat headed drift punch to knock it out. use a backing plate with a hole in it.

The shaft is a solid piece of metal with a hole drilled all the way through it for the pin. So you should be able to knock the pin out the other side of the hole once you remove the handle.
