Is the crank worn? The typical fix is a cap that's pressed/epoxied onto the crank to renew the surface. Since I don't know how skilled you are, are you sure you installed the seal correctly? The lip goes toward the engine, and the edges of each piece should not line up with the main bearing cap edge.

Yes, lip toward seal. THe one I removed had only a SLIGHT wear pattern, only on the tip of the tallest lip (there are actually two lips).

Since I can't find an oversize (smaller ID) seal, I think I might try this:

Get a new seal, reduce the size of one end of each half and grind the central metal core so that the ID shrinks about .050 to .080 in diameter compared to stock. Then, put some shims behind both halves (to keep it centered). THis should get BOTH of the seal lips to engage the crank.

FLAME SUIT ON! What do you think? If it works, it's an easy fix. Naturally, still stagger the ends in the block and journal. My rough calculations, based on Circumference=PI X D, indicate about .1 inch off each half will shrink the inner radius abou .060 inches. Probably enough for a good seal!

BTW, that felpro rear seal part #2901, is a red seal, for hipo applications running higher oil pressures, little thicker then the stock seal.

^ Yeah try that one. I purchased that one but installed the stock one that came with the Felpro gasket set I also purchased. Figured I'd return the red one since I didn't realize the gasket set came with a rear main seal. Ask me why I'm regretting that decision now...
