Default Trans C4 auto ???

68 with the C4 Auto trans and 289 -

When I got this car and finally got it running I was hearing a whinning noise coming from underneth (sounds like a power glide from a chevy). Thought it could be the torque converter. Today I drove about 12 miles and she popped out of gear while taking off from a stop light just as I was getting to work. Now when leaving today I made it down about 500 yards before there was no gear, they were all gone. After being on the side of the road for about 5 minutes started her up - in drive and down the street I go. The trans wasn't shifting out of 2nd though. I had to stop at a light and out of gear she goes and would not pop back in until I let it cool down and start the car back up. DUring all this I checked the linkage and the fluid level.

Does this sound like the torque converter???

Second if it is more than that would it be a smart move throwing in an AOD?

Need some inputs and I am on a very tight budget [:'(]

Thanx all !!!

When was the last time you treated the C4 to a new filter and fluid? Not that it's gonnaturn a tired trans into a rebuilt one but it's a rather cheap thing to do. Just make sure you get the correct trans fluid for the C4.

The problem sounds like an internal leakage problem - when the oil's hot, it's thin and will leak past worn areas easier/faster - specifically in the wet clutch servo's.

No I haven't done anything to the trans yet. The fluid doesn't look right to me either and was going to do a change out over the weekend but didn't get around to it.

the filters in C4's are just screens, its pretty damn hard to clog one and if you HAVE clogged one that means there is a considerable amount of of wear on the clutches and god knows whatelse.

alot of times by changing the fluid you remove the extra material that was floating around which was helping the thing irk its way down the road and now with new fluid it may not even run right.

drop your pan and take a look - i'd definately use some lucas tranny additive when you fill 'er up. we used that to milk another 6 months out of our contour before it finally puked.

I'm thinking of not touching it at all and letting a shop open it up. I have no clue when it comes to transmissions except for the simple basic stuff. Atleast they would be able to see it first hand. Boogerschnot just gave me a couple shops in the area and one is kind of down the road from me. Thinking they can open it up and let me know the damage.
