Just for my curiousity what is the purpose of doing this? Is it that the bigger axle housings require wider u-bolts and the stock spring plates won't take the wider u-bolts?
There are several reasons to do it this way:
1. Having the tapered axle tubing is period correct for a 65-66 Mustang even with a 9" rear end. Of course I only add that because it could be a valid reason, I personaly couldn't care less about "period correct" I am putting a Jag IRS unit in my Mustang for heavens sake. (this unit is for a friend)
2. By using the "period correct" tubing I don't have to source u-bolts or shock plates.
3. Sense I am using 8" axle tubes I can use the axles from the 8" rear end
4. All the other stock components such as brakes mount up with out having to modify anything
5. The axle tubes I cut from the donor 9" had all kinds of extra mounts sense it was a coil spring rear end, and I didn't want to cut them off.
6. The O.D. of the 8" tubing was almost the same as the I.D. of the original 9" axle tubing
7. My favorite reason because it is fun

What made you use the 8 inch axle tubes are they as thick as the 9 inch ones.
The wall thickness for the 8" housing tubing is 1/4" just like the 9" housing.

Your may be nuttier than I am you the man.
I was going to add the big torino ends on my 9" and do a lil narrowing mines a 66 but just want to drive it a while 1st.
BTW I have a neat project in the wings after my mustang is done. 67 Galaxie convertible. still all factory big block 390 and c6.
This is how I found it siting here in the same spot for 23 years.

Is the 9"a smooth back? A photo of the back side would be nice. The smooth backs are seldom seen these days.

dude... you need to be on TV.
That is a good idea but if I did that I would have to hire a staff of about 10 idiots and 2 morons so that there would be enough non car drama to make the show popular [8D] I am content to share my projects through the forums.
I volunteer to be a moron!

The back is humped, however some time in the future I am going to build another one using a 61 Galaxie 9" rear end I have and then it will be a smooth backed 9". The one I am building will be a lot stronger sense the stamped steel housing tapers out rather than being rounded to tubes.
