RE: '65 paint on inside of door
If its not scratched or rusted, you can just paint over it with a rattle can, it won't mess up the texture.
I'm gonna watch this thread cause I have a small dent and some peeling paint that needs to be smoothed out without losing the texture. Hopefully someone who has done it will answer.

alrighty smooth the dent out with filler prime sand it smooth, next take a towel etc something that will take a shape when it dries and wet it and lay it on some of the good grain to take and imprint. then paint the door and let it flash off while the door paint will still fingerprint push the object withthe grain into the fresh paint it will take the texture and it will dry and look very close to the original
as for the question of prepping the door as long as its not rusty clean it with wax and grease remover then just scuff it witha scotchbrite pad then topcaot after cleaning
