Matching Numbers For 66 Convertible?
Hey it's me again! I know this is a stupid question but here goes......
Where can I find the numbers on my car to know if they match? I have looked at the tag on the door and everything there checks out - it's the color it's suppose to be and so on but where do I check the engine/transmission number to know if everything matches?
Any info would surely be appreciated!

RE: Matching Numbers For 66 Convertible?
Here's the skinny: "numbers-matching" early Mustangs are a myth. No such animal. Numbers-matching Corvettes - yes. Numbers-matching Thunderbirds - you bet. But not the humble, run-o-the-mill early Mustang.
To be numbers-matching, the VIN has to be somewhere on the block. At least part of the VIN. Not only is there no VIN anywhere on the Mustang engines, but there's no way to be 100% sure if it's the original engine at all. Your best bet is documentation from the original owner and a ton of old receipts.
If you're bound and determined to know all you can - crawl under and remove your starter. Behind it is a short series of numbers and letters cast into the block (but hidden by the attached starter). That code will tell you the month and year the block was scheduled to be built (but no guaratee it was), as well as the car line it was destined for. That's about all you're going to find out. It's a bad thing because you're not guaranteed of the engine's originality to your car; it's a good thing because you can search and find a block stamped close to your car's build date, and be "correct."
So if you're looking to purchase a vintage Mustang and the owner tells you it's a numbers-matching car - consider yourself smarter than he is!
