The AOD has overdrive, drive and low (3 forward gears) and the original shifter has 1, 2 and drive (3 forward gears. Where you will run into trouble is the shift selector lever length. I swapped a HO 5.0 into my T-Bird and the V6 AOD had a shorter lever. That meant the shifter and trans didn't line up. I swaped the lever and that fixed it. I put a C6 in my 67 and had a simaler issue. The C4 lever fit the C6 and that fixed that issue. So I'm saying the lever length on the AOD may need to be modified but in theroy the shifter should work.
As for engine color, do want you want. I painted my engine red but car is red. It will all depend on the rest of the car...
