Flywheel and drivetrain

Flywheel and drivetrain
Ok, as someone new to the forum, I have done quite a bit of looking around and I am still faced with a delema. I'll give some backround on the car first as this might help.
I purchased a 1966 Mustang Coupe this past summer. It has been garage kept is is very clean. However, the owner at the time replaced the engine. It had a 289 but the block was bad so he junked it and used a 1968 302 from a donor 68 Mustang. I am using the original 3-speed manual tranni.
In my research I should be using the 157 tooth flywheel right? The one I pulled off has 168 teeth! It also says Hecho en Mexico! Anway, the clutch disc that also came off of it was an 11". When I would start the car it made a terrible grinding sound at the starter/flywheel. Which leads me to believe it is the wrong flywheel. Which one would be correct for a '68 302 engine? I am totally baffled on this one. Thanks for any and all help!!!

RE: Flywheel and drivetrain
I would say that the flywheel/clutch assembly you have now will work ok. If the flywheel/starter assembly actually works now, then I believe that they must be matched to work in your setup. It is my belief that if the starter/flywheel are mismatched, the starter would be so far out of alignment that it would not turn the engine over at all. The noise was probably a bad starter.
I think you can go to the smaller flywheel by just changing the flywheel and the starter out. The clutch itself would probably work if the flywheel is drilled for multiple clutch combos. Most aftermarket flywheels are quite flexible when it comes to clutch selection.
I can say that I have a nice mini starter that wont even touch my 157 tooth flywheel.....
