the 2 most important things with gaskets are to
1) Clean the metal faces on both pieces until they are totally free of any old gasket material and general crap...go ahead and wire wheel them so its really nice looking. That will give you a fighting chance at making a proper seal.
2) re tighten the bolts in a star pattern if applicable if there are only 2 bolts then simply skip between the 2. In either situation seat each bolt until it just touches then turn the first one about 75% of one rotation then do the same on the others keep going around until they all reach proper torque. If you just jam one all the way down then jam the 2nd one down it will never seal properly.
