RE: 64 1/2 coupe
Keep your money and keep looking. Don't be in a hurry. There are thousands of old mustangs out there for sale. I would never consider 5000 on a car that doesn't run and has brake issues. For that price, he should have had everything working properly.

In addition to the above comments, a later 289, 302 or a 5.0 will not bolt up to the bell housing. The housing would need to be changed because the 64s (and I think some 65s) use a 5 bolt patern, alllater SBFsuse a 6 bolt patern.
And as already stated,,,, too much rust!!

RE: 64 1/2 coupe
As many others said, stay away.
I paid $2800 for my '66 Coupe in Connecticut. It has WAY more surface rust, but very little rot-through on the body. The floors and cowls do need to be replaced, though. For $2200 and some spare time, I could have it in better shape than that car.
The rust patterns seem a bit odd. To me, it looks like a car that had problems to begin with. Someone shoved some plastic body filler over the problem spots and painted away. Who knows what kind of other issues you'll run into.

Try ww2.collectorcartrader.com www.craigslist.org ebay your local news papers or even see a car on the side of the road with a forsell sign in the window.

RE: 64 1/2 coupe
To help put things into perspective, I paid $2750 for a 65 coupe that had a rebuilt motor 289, tranny, brakes (no disc), and shiny new flowmasters. The only rust I found on the thing is the floor pan on the passenger side that was likely a result of a bad heater core. I did the cowl test and it passed with flying colors.
As stated in this thread already, look around and also consider having it shipped to your house.
Good luck and start pricing things out so that IF you do have to make some repairs (i.e. cowls, floor pans, fenders, etc...) you can get some sort of idea as to how much the total project will cost. Ever since I bought my first Mustang a couple of weeks ago I've been tracking and pricing parts out using Microsoft Excel. I know down to the dollar as to how much things cost and I can easily manage my budget.
