Default What is the most gas efficient motor?

I've always had intrest in classic mustangs but, they are seriously rough on gas mileage... :P

I wish you could swap a nice gas efficient motor into an old mustang! What I want to know is why not?
I know its kind of stupid, probably weight and other figures... I just don't know though!

No reason you can't, any fuel injected small block Ford is almost a drop in. I'm sure some more people who have done it will chime in.

It is a good question but it begs a few more -

What type of mpg would you consider efficient?
Hwy - 25 mpg or above?
City - 20 mpg or above?

Do you desire an EFI or carb?

Would you swap a 3 or 4 speed for a T5 so you can get better cruising mileage?

What are your driving habits (a lot of Hwy or city? Hills or mountains?)

I fear the answer you seek is a little more elusive than a simple response.

You can put just about anything you want in. Afuel injected V8, and an overdrive automatic or manual transmission combined with the right rear end ratio would do wonders for the fuel economy. These kind of swaps have been done many many times and there are kits for making many of these swaps a bolt in affair.

No reason why you couldn't even go with a more modern V6. You wouldn't have to, but aturbo or supercharged V6 would get you V8 power and if you could keep your foot out of it you would get decent mileage.

Bottom line is anything is possible depending on how much you want to spend.

Yeah, I was wondering if its posible to get 20mpg in city. Probably by using the smallest motor posible? Maybe from a older Honda or simular... Is that even posible with all the special electronics they have?

I'm all for swapping motors and such, but PLEASE don't try to put a Honda motor in a classic Stang.

[sm=badidea.gif] with that aside a 2.3 liter ford turbo swap has been done in a classic id actually liike to do one for a daily driver coupe, extremely fuel efficient and makes very good power to boot. they came stock in stuff like the mustang svo, merkur xr4ti, ford tbird turbo coupe
