It's easy and cheap to rebuild a carb. The kits usually cost between $20 and $30. You'll also need some carb cleaner.

It's very rewarding to rebuild a carb. Make sure you have a clean area to work in and stay organized. It is just a matter of taking it apart, cleaning it and then reassembling it with the new gaskets.

Oh, and the kits usually have extra gaskets, don't let that wig you out. Match up the new ones to your old ones and toss the others.

HTH!

I think you start with fixing the choke.

To get a car to start you need:
1. Correct amount of fuel - too much and it wont too little and it wont
2. A spark at the correct time
3. Compression

Assuming you have compression because it already starts - start with number 2 - Are you getting enough spark and is the timing spot on? If so then you need to look at number 1 - too much fuel or not enough.

When you say it sat 'for a really long time'... how long is that? months?..years?
How was it running before you quit driving it?

I think you start with fixing the choke.
I'm with you.

Fix the choke and take it from there. They don't put them on for no reason you know.

First thing you do when you wake up tomorrow morning is open your mouth as wide as you can and take the deepest breath you can as fast as you can.
The way you will feel is the way your engine feels.
You need a choke to start properly.

I replaced the points about a year ago, but maybe I did it wrong... How would I set them correctly?
A year is a long time for a set of points......

The best way to set them is by using a dwell meter, if you can still find one.

They can also be set with a feeler gauge, but I don't remenber the value off the top of my head,,,, .029??

If youbuy anything before setting your points you may be wasting your money. Set your points first...

Any advice to the contrary is wrong, wrong, wrong.... IMO of course...
