Default 9mm wires too big?

when i changed my distributor i got new wires. i went from 8 to 9 mm. and after changingeverything my car bogs though first and most of second. it sounds like its choking, i was just going to take my carb off and go through it. anyways, someone told me its prolly my wires, that they are too big for my setup, but i didnt think it made a difference, i mean they are just wires right? the thicker they are they should conduct a spark better right? thats what ive always thought. so if you guys could provide a little insight i would appriciate it

....did you set the timing after you installed the distributor?

yup, 10 degrees right on
i was messing with the carbs idle screws and i opened them about another turn just to see how it would run and it idles smoother but still chokes on take offs. its like i have to flood the carb so it doesnt bog. thats why im hoping it just needs new gaskets or somethin. so i think im just gona take it off, its only about 3 years old though, i thought it would last longer

Put it all back the way you had it originally. Then change things one by one and test. When you make multiple adjustments such as timing and fuel calibration, you're just asking for trouble.

Yeah, always 1 thing at a time. That's the cardinal rule for tuning/troubleshooting. My guess would be that your timing is off, if that's the only thing that was changed. Larger plug wires won't do that as long as they work. Is the vacuum advance hooked up? Is the timing that same as with the old dizzy?

Yeah, make sure you hooked the vacuum advance back up (not to sound condescending, I've forgotten about it before). Could be a crappy mechanical advance curve as well, so I'd check to see what the curve looks like.

yeah its hooked up and the timing is still at 10 deg. could the mechanical advance limiters inside the distributor have anything to do with it?

Disconnect the vacuum advance and fire it up. Check the advance at idle, 1500, 2000, 3000, and 3500. That will give you the mechanical advance curve.

putting on 9mm wires wouldn't do that, did you make sure you got your wires back correctly? I had a freind thats car sat for years, he put new wires on then had problems, bought a new carb still had probs, changed coils and other things I checked it out and he had 2 wires crossed........and he swore he checked that.

yeah fireing order is correct, but i figured out the prob. i had the carb rebuilt just for good measure. when putting the carb back on, i fired her up and set the idle screws and i heard a clicking. it was kinda dark outside and i could see a spark. there was a thread like wire sticking out from the boot of spark pulg wire and it was sparking on my valve cover. so i clipped it and it runs good now, i just need to play with the screws a bit more
