Default RE: Engine Trouble

Ok I just talked to the mechanic and he said the main driveshaft bearing was blown or broken or whatever and he said that in turn blew out the oil pump I just put in and that blew out the rear main seal.

I think he might be saying that your main bearings are worn out to the point of causing the rear seal to not be able to seal, or to the point of actually wearing the seal out. I could agree with this happening. Especially if you are at the point where your engine will not hold respectable oil pressure when it has enough oil in the crankcase.

If you have respectable oil pressure when you have enough oil, it might just be the rear seal.

Your car should be able to hold minimum 10 lbs of pressure at idle when at operating temperature and a minimum of 30 or 40 at speed when warmed up.

If your car will not meet these minimums, especially the 10 psi at idle, you can be reasonably sure that the engine is worn out and needs a rebuild. If the 40 year old engine has never been rebuilt this would not surprise me at all.

The good news is that if the engine is built to close to stock standards, it does not have to be really expensive to do yourself, or to get a rebuild.

As mentioned in this thread, a stock rebuild might be in order due to the rarity of your car. Or you can go crate engine and save the original for later... but a rebuild will be cheaper.

BTW... I don't think that the oil pump will go out due to bad bearing and seals, it can be ineffective due to bad bearings, and I suppose the pump might be ruined due to running dry, ie: no oil in the crankcase.. but I really doubt that the pump would go first in this situation.

Thanks for all of that and I will update you guys whenever the mechanic pulls the engine to fix it. Just so you know it hasn't been holding oil pressure worth crap so that is part of the problem.

Well My K-Code has bit the dust. I will be replacing the engine with a stock 289 and maybe someday in the future I will be able to replace it and have a K-Code. For the time being the finances just don't match up enough for me to replace it with a HiPO.

On the brightside I may be coming into a GT 500E soon so that could be a good thing. Thanks for all the help and advice.
