Default 6cyl vs V8 rearend

I have a 68 coupe with 5 lugs all the way around. The car is originally a 6cy and I thought all 6 cyl had the 4 lug or was that earlier years?? I can't tell if everything was swapped out to 5 lug or not. I am definately sure the car came with a 200 six auto.

Have you decode the Vin#?
My guess would be if the car came with 6 cyl. and it now has a V/8
then someone may have done a frontend/rearend conversion as well,
as far as if their were factory 5 lug with 6 cyl in '68. I'm sure someone will chime in that can tell you.

The car still has the 6cyl auto trans with the smaller bolt pattern not the bigger V8 pattern. I looked all around the car and everything looks factory. A guy told me all 68's and up went to 5 lug no matter the engine but I'm asking the pros here.

I want to say that the 6 cylinder rears open up from the rear, and I know all 8" or 9" rears open from the front.....

I can say with certainty that if your axle has a bolt on cover in the back of the housing it is for sure a 6 cyl rear. (a 7.2" I think)

If the 3rd member bolts in from the front I am 98% sure it is not a 6 cyl...

I don't know why I can't remember for sure, I usually always remember things like that...

Should the rear leaf springs be 4 leaves? It has the 8" rear with 4 springs and old air shocks. If this is a swap, which I think it is, it must have been done along time ago. Thanks for everyones help so far. I am wondering if the color is kinda rare? I haven't seen too many gold 68's.
