Im no expert but that seems kind of high...670CFM is a lot of carb too I would think that with that much flow you would need matching heads and valves too not just a longer duration cam or whatever.

Unless that intake cost 500 new it seems that you could scare up the same parts on ebay/craigs list/ or the like and get that whole system for about 500 to 600 bucks.

Maybe someone else can provide a better estimate.

670cfm is way to big for a 289 with factory heads

Not for a stock 289. I wouldn't trust the 40yr old factory valve springs or rod bolts to spin up much past 5500, if that, let alone to 6200+. Even if you did, that cam would be near unstreetable with the stock gearing. Plus, 670CFM is too much for a 289, even one spinning 6200.

If you want a factory improvement setup, try a Comp Cams XE256H or Edelbrock Performer Plus cam/lifter kit along with an Edelbrock Performer or Weiand Action Plus (8124) intake and a 500-550CFM carb. Any more than that and I'd want screw in studs, beefier valve springs, and ARP rod bolts.

Notes: "Using this kit may require the purchase of additional valvetrain components. Other issues to consider when using this kit are the use of an adjustable valve train, piston to valve clearance, and proper lifter preload. Failure to do so could result in poor engine performance and potential engine damage."

^that^ was off of the pageof thelink you gave us...

try this....

weiand #8124 intake
holley 570 street avenger
summit .471 lift cam

those are clickable btw, and if you want a better price on a 570 i'll sell you one with like 20 miles on it for like 300 bucks. (i need to save up for my proform)

*edit* just to be clear, that cam WILL work with stock springs, but if you wanna wind 'er up some stiffer springs would be a good choice anyways.

So would he better off upgrading the heads first? That would allow him to run the bigger cam like he wants and the free flowing heads would also allow him to run around a 670cfm carb right? would a kit like this work better http://store.summitracing.com/partde...p;autoview=sku

the perfect sized carb for performance and reliability is actually the factory for carb the 4100 the 1.08 is great for a stock motor its around 480cfm and then when you need to increase the rpms slightly the 1.12 4100 is a step up at about 600cfm. then a 650 maybe when he does h/c/i(heads cam and intake) if i was gonna buy any of the heads on the market id go for afr 165's

IMO, you still need ARP rod bolts if you want to spin the engine up past 5500. I wouldn't want to be the one to find out how strongyour 40yr old rod bolts are.

Personally, I think he'll be happy with a cam, intake, and carb. It'll get him around until rebuild time, at which point he can do matching heads, cam, intake, and carb.
