Rear end seals

Rear end seals
Can anyone recommend a good method for installing new seals in the rear end? Is it as simple as using a big hammer and a cylinder a couple of inches in diameter? Or is there some specialized tool that is needed to do it right?

RE: Rear end seals
They have bearing race/seal install tools but it's usually just as easy (cheaper too) if you just use a socket big enough to rest on the outer metal ring of the seal/bearing. Cover the socket with a wood block so you distribute the force of the hammerblow accross the entire surface of the socket.
It's better to take a few small blows to get the seal put in rather than one big blow.

+1 to Derf00,
Heed his advice about using small blows,
I also put a thin coating ofRTV around thecircumfrence of the seal to prevent oil leakage
