Keep 'em coming. Barring the existence of some unusual piping connection directly from the crankcase to the exhaust line , this one wasn't a toughie.

I'm not a tech by trade, but I did do reasonably well on the series of sample questions that showed up in "Brake & Front End" magazine a while back. A constant theme seems to be "think how the system works".

I kept looking for the "trick".... Lets see,,, past the rings into the crankcase, through a defective PCV valve into the intake, through a defective EGR into the exhaust and out the tailpipe...

Nah,,, sometimes the simple answer is the right answer....

I said exhaust valve....

And yes, I think that this would be a fun feature to run these questions here.

There are ideas and then there are good ideas. This is a GOOD idea. Too easy though. The dog could have gotten that one right. Toughen them up.

How do you make a cat go woof?

With gasoline and a match.

This is a good idea. Keeps everyone involved and thinking that get on here. Sometimes the easy questions are the tough ones if we allow it.

All the ASE test do is establish that the machanic has a basic working knowledge of the different systems. To say that you are ASE certified is not to say you are a good mechanic. It is one of those things you either have a feel for or you don't.
I'll agree on that, I think I'm one of those certified but not good mechanic, but that'll come with time I'm sure.

The key to answering certification test questions is what is the most COMMON cause of the issue the car is having. A lot of the time, all the answers given can cause the given issue.
