Opinion question on 65 coupe
I am buying/trading for this Mustang this weekend. The seller says the car is worth $12k+
It isa '65 coupe with 74k original miles.
It has factory:
Power Steering--working
Power Brakes--working
Air Conditioning--working
Pony Interior--original
Console--original
It is in great mechanical condition with all the original sheetmetal. It has never been wrecked and it has no bondo or fiberglass. It is rust free...except for a few bubbles forming under the paint along the driprails--most likely due to poor paint prep in the past. It has spent it's whole life in Atlanta--DSO was Atlanta also.
I had considered repairing the bubbled areas and installing a white vinyl top rather than have to match the paint, etc. I even considered a white GT stripe and some styled steel wheelsto match.
It comes with any and all original parts that have been replaced--radio, steering wheel, shifter, visors, even the old valve covers andgaskets!, etc.
He has owned it since '96 and his father-in-law owned it from '84-'96. He has about $7k in recepitsfor work performed on the car in the past--even a $1500 receipt where he had the A/C repaired, tune up,and the front end rebuilt.
He is driving it on a 2 hour roadtrip to let me see it.
I am trading a car worth $7000 to $7500 for it. My plan is to keep it a little bit and sell it to buy a '67-'70 fastback project car. (or trade for one)
How much do you guys feel the car is worth? Is it worth my $7500 car? Is it worth it to get it to trade for another project?

RE: Opinion question (Value)
That is my goal. I have built a "67 GTA and a "69 Mach 1 in the past. I want a '67-70 fastback, but they are priced a little higher and I have a guy that desperately wants my car. This car would make a good stepping stone toward my fastback project.

looks good to me!! Car looks like it is in great shape. What is the car you are trading?? If you are trading something that is worth 7000 to 7500, i would say it is a no brainer. You could always sell the 65 for alot more, at least i would think. I look at my car, i spent alittle over 7k for mine, and i am hoping (if i ever get rid of it ) i will get a nice return.

RE: Opinion question on 65 coupe
You are trading a $7500 car and no cash for this car? Hell yes! In a heartbeat. But I would say if you want to maintain value keep the original appearance. No vinyl top or stripes. That way if you sell it you appeal both to the people who want original and people who want something to modify.

RE: Opinion question (Value)
I am trading a heavily modified '89 Chrysler Conquest for it. I have about $10k invested in it, but everyone knows you won't get out of a car what you put in it unless it is a classic.
There is a chance he may not want to trade after he sees my car... or I may not want to trade once I seehis in person.
I will find out Saturday.

I'd hope it was worth at least that much or we are all in trouble. You could blend that color pretty easy, cheaper than a vinyl. You would have to pull the chrome to get the top on. I don't think you can buy the new chrome for the sail panel. Put some nice wheels and it would probably be worth $10 or $12 grand.

So if he did not want to trade would he take $7500 cash and then you sell yours to someone for $7500? AndI guess, an obvious word of caution...just because he says it's rust free you want to check anyway. It looks good, but pour a gallon of water down the cowl vent anyway and make sure it does not drip onto the floor. I assume you'll take a good look underneath as well. My $7500 mustang is a lot rougher than this one appears to be.

Sounds like an amazing deal... The key in buying a car, IMO, is to negotiate the heck out of it. Point out all the things that are wrong and how much it will cost to fix them and stuff and then try to talk they guy down. Get it to the point where he considers walking away and then buy it, if that makes sense. Make sure you are in control of the negotiations.
(and hope that he doesn't look at this forum, lol)
