Default a couple rear end questions

before i start i have about 600$ for the rearend.

while i was searching the net for good deals, i came across a guy selling a 8in rear out of a 67 fastback. he says its posi and hes not sure what gear ratio it is (im assuming stock). he wants 500.00 for the whole thing, brakes included.

so, a couple questions

do you guys think thats a good deal?

should i not bother buying the whole setup since i already have an 8inon my car?

should i just use the money to posi what i already have and get the gears i want?

im assuming the stock gears on his rear end are around 2.73? i want 3.50, so i would have to change them anyway.

think i could find a 8in third member with 3.50s and posi for400 or less? (it doesnt have to be new)

or.... should i just save the money till i have enough to get the 9in 31 spline? (i can prolly pick one up for around 1200, third member, housing and axles)

Looks like to me you could build what you have for that kind of money. The guy that sets up my rearend's claims you can't hardly tear up an 8' but people change to 9" anyway. I did for my fastback. It cost me $400 for a 73 rear, cut it down, replaced the cups. It cost another $400 for bearings, seals, 3:50 gears and setting them up. If you are going to 3:50 gears, the only thing you would be buying from him is a spare chunk and third member.

Finally someone that agrees thata properly set up 8" will take all kinds of horse power and torque!Everyone seems to think you have to have a 9" for a high horsepower car and that is just not the case. $600 is a lot of money for a rear that the guy can't even tell you what gear set is in it. Tracloc or Posi units generally came with lower gears. There is a good chance that gear set is 3.50:1 but what kind of shape is it in? You just don't know. I would recommend the Currie TSD and a fresh gear set. Install all of that in the rear end you have. The Currie unit is $400 and the gears should run about $200.That is better than going with a rear that is in unknown condition.

Not to hijack the thread or anything, but do you guys think this is a good deal? It would fit in my '65 if it came off of a '64 1/2 right?

Someone has been messing with that one. What does "long side is now the short side" mean? I also don't see any spring perches on that housing.

With a 4-pinion differential, I'd guess around 400ft-lbs or so. You could probably go more than that even, as long as you weren't beating the crap out of it.

Use the rearend you have and look into the Currie unit. A 3.55 gear in a good all around gear for the street & strip. And yes an 8" can take quite a bit of punishment, over 400 HP as long as your not drag racing the car every weekend.I have had my 8" for 10 years with 3.55's and so far so good.

If you already have an 8" that is has a good housing, you can rebuild the center section with new gears and a Ford Traction Lok for your budget. I'd add a little more to your budget and replace the axle bearings/seals at the same time.
