Default water pump rubbing question - newbie!

This is my first time putting together a Ford motor (1968 J code 302) for my 66 stang. I just finished putting on a rebuilt water pump and noticed that it makes a scraping noise for about a 1/4 turn when turned by hand. Not enough to really bind it or anything. Sounds like some part of the impeller may be scraping the water pump plate? Anything to major worry about with this?

Thanks!

Yes, if it rubbing on the back, it could wear a hole in your timing cover. Is there slack in the pump shaft, because it shouldn't rub!

Yep! The metal worn off will clog/corrode the coolant system and the pump would over heat as well.

From my 69 shop manual, engine section. Water pump to cylinder block or front cover: 12-15 ft lbs for 302/351. Same for water outlet housing.

I know for Chevy small blocks there are different neck and body heights for the same style of pump. I believe ford has different ones they made too. Go to Napa to get the appropriate info. Most retail auto parts stores only list one per year. Napa will have all the options listed for each year they were available.

Err.. check the pulley bolt to see if they are to long. I had that issue when I thought how cool my new allen head cap bolts were on mine until I tried to turn the pump.
Trip back to Ace h/w fixed it right up tho.
