How should I go about removing the steering column on my 67? I had the gearbox serviced awhile back and now I would like to remove just the column to clean it up and paint it, its nasty. If it matters, I have the early 67 style which resembles the earlier years, with the gearbox and shaft 1 piece.

I have my steering wheel off andjust removed the U-shaped bracket holding it to dash, what next?

Disconnect the wiring at the base of the column, wrap both hands around the column, give it a good yank. Should slide right up and off.

I can't say for sure because my son disassembled () the old column and box from the 66, and we didn't go back stock, but I am reasonably sure that what follows is a close representation of what has to happen.

There will be a bracket that holds the column to the floor and something like a clamp that holds the column tube to the box.

I am for sure on the floor place, but not so sure on the clamp, just supposition..

If you have the bracket to the dash removed you just need to disconnect the wiring and it SHOULD pull straight out!!You might have to give it some muscle but it s supposed to come right out! Good Luck!

Ok, I think i know the wiring your talking about, so I'll get that off and see if she comes loose. I have a feeling it'll fight me alittle though.

Got another question. There is a large grommet thing (like a steel plate with a rubber middle) at the base of the column that seals it tight on the firewall. Anyone know the name of this?

There's a bearing at the top of the column that aligns the steering shaft in the middle. Sometimes they can be sticky. Take apart your upper column (turn signal cam, bearing retaining plate.... You may have to wack the column a little with a plastic mallet to break loose that stuck bearing.

James, I actually have the steering wheel off and all that crap in there that holds it in place. I figured while I have it out I'll clean up the column...

FYI: You can't remove the wiring without carefully pulling the pins out of the plug.
Handle it with care, it's 40 years old a brittle. I don't know if anyone make a replacement.

There's also a rubber "boot" down at the bottom of the shaft at the end of the column. if that is old, it can be hard to pull up off the shaft.
