Default sand blasting

Hey guys, great looking forums you have here. I have been reading some of the posts here about sand blasting and I have a few questions. I bought my son a 68 coup and it needs a little restoration. I am a comercial painter and I do a fair amount of sand blasting, but I have not blasted a car. My equipment is all commercial made by clemco, most of the post that ive read talk about using smaller units. My pot holds 600 lbs of media and uses at least 185 cfm @90 psi. Is this too much? I know that the media I normally use is too coarse. I guess my question is can I still use my unit? Ive read alot the sheet metal warping, also Ive read about people using play sand as a media.

Thanks for reading my ramblings and I appreciate any help.

First, you can't sandblast exterior panels with that, any of them will warp those. I'm guessing you could turn your unit down. I use 100psi on my little blaster. You can do the inside, bottom and front with fenders off. I wouldn't use it on the interior of the roof, though. I use silica sand, that I get from Airgas[welding supply] They have different grits, I use the 7020. I have never tried the play sand, I've heard people use it, it works. As you know, moisture is a factor and so is the mess. Sounds like you have the protective gear and are used to eating sand.

I used 8 mil glass beads on my entire car. The metals warps from the heat generated by the impact, not so much the grit of the media. When I blasted, I aimed the hose almost parallel to the panels, and used a fast sweeping motion over a broad space,(as not to generate heat). Our machine operates at 130 psi.... The booth was big enough to roll the whole car inside, although it was a little tight. I puit it up on jackstands, and laid on by back to get the bottom. Just be patient, and remember to keep it moving...

"play" sand or blasting sand works well but creates huge amounts of lethal dust.
Alway, always wear a mask!
I prefer the glass beads as well @ 100-110 psi@95cfm.
