i would stick with a 289, mostly cause they can be some nasty little engines

its not that hard to get a 289 to 350-360 flywheel hp

and that will get your 300 to the ground

I'd spend the $2k on a diff and suspension, upgrade the driveline, get gears etc. It'll still be faster and more fun to drive with gears and suspension. Then you have what you need for the power later.

Those 2.80's are absolutely killing performance. I switched mine out for 3.25's (which are still fairly tall) a while back and it made a huge difference. Probably just as much differenceas changing from my old tired 289 to the built 331 I have now.

Are you going to run 300rwhp on drum brakes?

Why do you want 300 hp? Race rice rockets? Get your car to the point where you and it, can safely handle those extra ponies.

Many Classic Mustangs have been wrapped around trees becuase they had way too much engine and not enough stopping power.

I would recommend upgrading those drums to disc before I started putting more horses under the hood.

Just my .02

sorry about that now but i'm scared ****less with my drums and ?200? crankwheel HP.
to top it all off, some of the master cylinders (mine included) are single master.
In a matter of safety I cannot recommend to turn one screw for tuning without checking/upgrading the brakes.
300RWHP on a drum setup is madness

just my humble opinion though
