Default 2 grand to spend

im really wanting to get some more horsepower but i keep getting talked into building a roller 302. whats the deal? what do you reccomend? can i do a complete roller setp for 2 grand? im shooting for 300 wheel horsepower. to get that i'd have to change heads (1100 bucks), cam and intake swap, new rockers, ect.

why a roller? you can get 300 rwhp from a 289 if you build it right

i would just stick with a flat tappet hydraulic cam, get some nice heads, intake, carb, headers, and some little ignition upgrades

now if you are having an engine built from scratch and you dont have any 289 parts then i would just go with the 302, and if you get a late model 302 then it is already set up for a roller cam

if you went with a roller ready block and built a 302 then it wouldnt be a big deal at all, but converting a non roller block to a roller setup cost some $$

1st off do not let anyone talk you into doing something you do not want to do!!You should be able to get 300 horse no problem with that 289!!dcohen nailed it when he said it,If you have a roller block its no prob, but if you dont its going to cost you big$.I own several old stangs and they all have at least 300 HP with simple basic mods!I would just go with the hydraulic cam, some nice heads, headers, elec ign,and a 4 barrel high rise intake and nice carb!

can you list the specs then? i'd much rather stick with the 289. my current specs are in my sig, plus some head work (bigger valves, milled, new springs, ect)

it wont cost you big $ money to do a roller swap. i only spent about 250$ to do it. plus the cost of the motor which was another 200$. but what they said is true, do what you want to to do, not what others want. with 2gs you can have that 289 breathing fire! well not really but you get what im saying.

Didnt we do this same thing last week?
Gears and a lim slip gets you moving on the best bang for the buck and a 100 shot of nos but thats risky on a stock motor.

Getting a late model roller block would be better/easier in the long run, but on a $2k budget by the time you do that there's not quite enough left for the kind of h/c/i that'll get you 300rwp. To get an honest 300rwhp you're gonna need north of 350 at the crankshaft. A good h/c/i on a 289 can do it, but you'll need a bunch if supporting bolt ons as well, plus drivetrain upgrades. 300rwp with a weak transmission, or an open differential, or weak suspension etc ain't gonna go very fast after something breaks. And speaking of which, you'll need good brakes to stop that kind of power. If you already have the bolt ons and supporting drivetrain then it's as simple as an h/c/i if the engine is in good shape. Otherwise, you can get the power, but won't have traction or reliability. It's one thing to build power and another entirely to control it.

your right 100% 67mustang,

i just swapped out my c4 for a toploader 4 speed (wide ratio) so the tranny part is fine. i still have a tired and wore out suspension with an open 2.80 rear end lol. all comes in time tho, as these projects never seem to end. 4 wheel disc are goin on sometime or another along with a full suspension kit (front and rear).

im thinking about a edelbrock performer RPM kit (heads, cam, intake) since everything matches. the engine is on a fresh rebuild(5-6000 miles) with all new internals but i seem to do everything twice it seems.

a buddy of mine reccomend that even if i do not reach the 300 horse goal, a little giggle juice might do the trick and it'd be sneaky too lol

Properly tuned and setup nitrous is no more dangerous that a blower, or n/a. You just have to have everything setup properly and tuned right. I'd spend the $2k on a diff and suspension, upgrade the driveline, get gears etc. It'll still be faster and more fun to drive with gears and suspension. Then you have what you need for the power later.
