+1 on all the comments so far...especially JMDs cheap/ performance contradiction.
Personally i think throwing new parts at an old engine with unknown history is a dangerous game. Just like going to the casino... you may get lucky or you may just as well have thrown the cash out the window on the way there!
One thing not mentioned so far...and this assumes the engine runs reasonably well...is changing rear gearing. Swapping from 3.0 to something like 3.5 will give a better response than adding headers to a stock engine.
