im going to rebuild my 289
rather than buy a crate motor for 5k i decided to keep my original motor. i am looking to do the entire top end with modern goods. i am seeking recommendations on what to get.
here is what i am looking for
aluminum high flow heads
intake/carb (there is a guy by me with entire efi set up for $200. it is the original 5.0 from ford. is this a good way to go?
cam/rockers
ignition
headers(jet coated)
i want it to perform and look good. i live in the desert so should i upgrade to a aluminum radiator?
can i 350hp from a good 289 set up.
Thanks

RE: im going to rebuild my 289
yes you can get 350 HP @ the flywheel with a 289 without trying very hard if you just throw a little cash at it.
yes you should get a better radiator, shouldnt we all?
no, you dont want a stock 5.0 fuel injection setup.
67mustang has brought to attention the new edelbrock heads that seem to have some very nice numbers, i would run with them.
cam is up for debate, you can go roller conversion for maximum power and longevity or you can spend hundreds less and put another flat tappet cam back in (which will still make gobs and gobs of power). 1.6 full roller rockers are the norm, i like the crane energizer's cause they are cheap and perform great.
i would go with a crane ignition system (box, dizzy, coil), MSD really cant touch the features and design of the crane stuff.
i'd be looking at something from a wieand 8124 to a edelbrock performer rpm or rpm air-gap for an intake, with something between a 570 to a 650 holley design carb
if we had more information about your intended use for the car and the rest of yoru setup (trans, gears, etc) we could narrow this down a bit more for you.

I would agree with all the recommendations above....except for the Energizer roller rockers. I had three of the break on me in a motor. They are made from a very low grade metal alloy, and as cast not forged. Pulling a motor and fishing needle bearing out of your oil panis not fun. Spend a few bucks more and get a good set of Crower roller rockers.

RE: im going to rebuild my 289
a part time daily drive. i plan on putting about 10k-15k a year on it but i want that to be fun milage. im sick of the windshield in my 3/4 ton diesel.
i have a t5 out of a 86 stang. i have another forum going for that.
does the cam come with lifters or are they purchased seperatly?
is the eldelbrock performer kit fot 1700 a good way to go. can i do better for the same amount of cashola?

RE: im going to rebuild my 289
i'd stick with a 289 (i just like them alot more than a comparable 302)
also i would not just grab a edelbrock kit, you can make much more power by a proper separate parts selection - and these forums are a great place to assist in which parts work together.
1965, did you just get a bad set or something? what kind of spring pressure and RPM's were you seeing? ford used teh crane's for their 1.7 RR's in the 93 cobras, and my seat pressure is 120 lbs and i would shift at 6800 when romping on it. probably 10k miles and never had a single problem with mine.
