Default 3rd member build

[align=left]im getting ready to have my 3rd member built

this is what im having done

detroit tur-trac = 500
4.11 gears = 189
new bearing and shim kit = 150
labor = 150

does that sound about right?

i will be running a 360hp 289 and a 5 speed with a .59 over drive, so cruising should still be decent

and one other thing, if i do the rearend and get 4.11 and keep my 3spd manual for a while until i get the $$ to do the 5 speed swap will i still be able to drive the car? or will the gearing be ridiculously low

What is 1st gear on your 3-speed and on your 5 speed?? That will make a big difference as to how "drivable the car is" With a 3 speed and 4:11 gears 50+ MPH will be turning some high RPMs. Are you going to be drag racing when it is all said and done?? With 4.11:1 gears most 5 speeds will become a 4 speed with a grannie gear in first. As far as the cost and labor that sounds about right. I am assuming this is a 9"?? Also if I might ask why are you going with a true trac rather than a trac lock??

i have an 8 inch rear also..those prices are almost exaclty what i paid for my parts.me and a buddy ofmine built it in my basement, so labor was pizza and drinks, hahah. i have 3:55's tho. im running abuiltup289 and a custom built c4. im now also concerned with if my gears are right..i was orig going with a t-5 conversion untill i found out my yard T-5 was junk.. good luck

true trac FTW

I agree with whatDaze said,1st might be an issue in the 5spd.
4.11 with your old 3 speed will put you approx 3400 at 60mph (depending on tyre diameter)

+1 way too low a gear unless its a drag car.
I have a 323 trac lock 9".
My 5 speed I had Kiesler build a tko 500 with a lower than norm 1st gear takes off like a 410 but crusies about 2300 @ 75 mph

Think 323 -355 should be a good all round gear for a 3 speed. I think most stock were 280 open tho I have seen a couple of 300 or 308 i think was the next one up.

Unless you're building a full drag car, then forget about 4:11s or even 3:80s. Sure they sound cool but you'll hate them in a month. Stay in the 3:50 range with a 5 speed and you'll enjoy all around performance.

JamesW hit it dead on.
I had a toploader 4 speed 15" tall wheels with 373 gears and was turning about 3500 rpm @ 70mph not fun and gas was bellow 2$ a gallon then.

i had 4.11's on a 66 fairlane with a 3 speed manual transmission...not bad at all...revved great and it was my daily driver...i used it to commute to college about 80 miles round trip...i had a 26 inch tire, 292/292 512/512 lunati cam...felt perfect....alot of these calculators are off at times...i personally am going with a 3.80 gear ....these cars are alittle harder to get to hook up!
