I did a lot of research on this when looking for my cam I decided on the edelbrick 204 214. The next level up - the rpm by all accounts really needs a shorter than stck rear end, and if in an auto, a mild stall converter. If you are currently stock, you will notice a good power gain, morein the middle/top, and no loss down low. Anything around this sort of duration and lift will be good, assuming you are keeping the rest of the motor/drivelinerelatively stock.

the performer cam is best suited to a heavy vehicle with a small cube 302, like a truck that wants lots of low end and mpg's, it signs off about 4000 rpm in a 289-302. The 5.0 rollercam was about 211 @050 or so. If you are running a flat tappet cam in a lighter car like a mustang with everything else stock I would run at least 212-218 int duration and about 478 lift. The comp 260-268 high energy cams work great with stock heads, the erson TQ-20 is a good old grind with 214 478 specs, the smaller XE cams work great too but use the matching valvesprings. Comp cams are ground 4 deg's advanced so to help low end. For a carbed 289-302 I would keep LCA around 108-110. The perfromer cam is not very impressive at all by itself unless in a heavy vehicle. My choice if Ihad a stock 289 with a performer/performer rpmint and 600-650 vac sec carb, headers and dual ex would be the comp hi energy 260, it will have a slight "burble" maybe a slight lope when cold, have more power from low to top, more mpg's and be easy on the valvetrain.

that first Z cam you had listed would be a nice piece. i always fall back to the summit 218/228 .471/.471 grind cause its cheap and a proven performer. great idle quality and low/mid range power but falls off quick after 5k.

the z cams are supposed to be a new design, so i would put heavy consideration into one of them.

Im also running the Performer Plus cam in my freshly rebuilt 351w and I have to say it isbetter than stock even with my 2 bbl still on it, but the first chance I get I am definately going to pull it and put in an RPM cam.. I should have listened to most of the guys here and went with it from the begenning.. Im running 2.75 gears right now so the plus is ok on me and good on the highway, but I still want more.. more .. more.. and right now I feel like I cant get more because the cam gives out around 5000rpm.. The RPM cam goes up to 6500 if im not mistaken.. Go with the better cam, some headers and a weiand stealth or performer rpm intake.. and that puppy will go!! And still be very street-able..
