Default 351W & Heads Heads Heads!

I'm exhausted. I've looked all over the internet for what heads to use on my '77 351W I just picked up from a monarch. I hear that ford in '77 seriously limited the power of this engine and that the heads I have on there (stock from '77) are garbage. So I have been looking. I see GT40, GT40P, D0's, C9's, E7's. I am so confused. These GT40's, are they just heads off of a 5.0 engine? If so, I should be able to get them from a wrecker right? Oh wise and humble ford engine guys, whats the best route to go? I'll be happy with 350 HP so i'm not going to stroke the engine. I'm just so confused as to what head I should be using. Any help you can give would be great! Thanks!

Jesse

Dont want to give you exact data but do a search for the ford explorer years that came factory v8.
those were gt 40 heads.

Also, as far as stock heads go, the 69 - 70 351 W heads were highly prized....

I had a set but I gave them away to someone under the condition that they were to be used,,,,, I think I got screwed on that one...

Oh well.....

If you can find some GT 40s grab them. They have the larger 351 size valves and ports and 64cc chambers. Also you'll have hardened valve seats with stainless valvessince these are modern heads.
E7s work OK on 302s with a little port work on the exhaust side. I would never consider using them on a 351
I have TFS twisted wedge al heads on my 351. I like them much.

the heads you want are the ones with casting code D0OE or c90E. They have the large valves and smaller combustion chambers to keep compression high. They are the best flowing stock SBF heads I think.

Do you know the casting number on the heads you are looking for? Here are two links to webpages with stock head info.
351C and some 351W head info
http://home.comcast.net/~jelerath/mu.../heads-fr.html
Ford Head Flow Numbers for both stock and aftermarket heads.
http://users.erols.com/srweiss/tablehdc.htm#Ford

If you notice, there are a ton of different heads for 351W and many of them were different stock heads. Just becareful when comparing heads. More flow is not always better. It can hurt you if the intake runner is too big for your engine.

I have a set of GT40 heads on my 351W in my 88 Bronco. Ford put them on crate engines for a while. They are ok, but need work if you are shooting for high horsepower, IMO.

Sorry I cannot help much on the stock stuff, but if you want an opinion on aftermarket, I really like the AFR heads.

It is not just the heads that limit the power on that year. Compression ratio is way less than say a 69 351W. Smaller chamber may get some of that back but not enough to make a race motor. Pretty much everything from the 70's is junk.....

Crap, well, i'm not going for a race engine. I just want a good daily driver for the summers that has some oomph for the clowns and ther're canadian tire camaro's. I was thinking of the GT40 heads, then get a new cam, crank and pistons. Maby I will stroke ita little, but not too much.

Again, thank you all for your input.
