Hereis anarticle on the I6 to V8 swap on the 64-66s, but it's not far from what is need for the 68. Checkout this Mustang & Fordsarticle, and this parts list.

68 is easier since the spindles you don't change just the hubs brakes springs shocks then the normal rear end engine tranny etc etc.

Is the 68 rear end different or is it just axles and gears? Also is the tranny different or is it just the bellhousing?

All inline 6 cars made 64-70 have the 7.5 and its a weak rear end all v8 cars came with a 8 inch the big block had a 9 inch.Harrisont i would since its a old car the rear springs are probably wore out.67 up inline 6 used the same bolt pattern on the bell housing but the tranny was geared different then the v8 version.

ive calculated everything and its about $876 (for preperation for dropping a v8), excluding the rear end and the radiator because ill probably be yanking them out from a junkyard. how do i know what rear end i should find? should i just bring a tape measure with me? and how would i take it apart of the car? also when i get the disc brake conversion its going to be 5 lug, but when i take a rear end from the junk yard it is probably a 4 lug huh? so would i be able to change it to 5 lug with out converting to rear disc brakes? and one more question, would i need to find a 65 rear end or i can use the other years too? sorry im new to this kinds of stuff.

you can get either an 8in, 8.8in(explorers etc) or a 9(mid 70's lincoln versailles bolt in after movement of the the spring plates, trucks- v8 broncos, i beleive v8 f150's and up had em too, make sure it is a 8, 8.8 or 9 before taking it out)for the swap. since im planning on putting some power down i went with the 9 for the extra insurance. The only thing you might find is that you hafto get the rear narrowed ( i heard 2-300 $$) and you will need to get new axles as well if needs to be narrowed. they should all be 5 lug but i beleive if its out of a truck its a slightly different bolt pattern so you wil need new axles. taking it out is simple- just unbolt the shocks and the u bolts from the rear end, also brake lines.. acetelyne torches will help a lot

IMO, if you really watch it, junkyard swap, andshop around, etc,,,,,,By the time you are done, plan on spending $4,000 for the swap not counting the engine.

Am I in favor of these swaps? You betcha!,,, but you need to go in with realistic expectations....

If you have to move from the junkyard for your parts, prices will go up..

JMD, normally I agree with you, but ...

I bought a complete suspension kit from Laurel Mountain for $809. I bought a brake kit from DiscBrakeSwap for $525. I bought a parts car for $400, took out the rearend, wiring, pitman arm, etc. and then sold the hulk for $300. I still need the drag link, but that is about it. So for $1500 plus shipping (which was about $200, IIRC) I have it all.

If I'm missing something, please let me know.
