Default speedo cable

I installed a new speedo cable today. but it doesnt work. I checked the gauge turning it by hand and it works, i checked it after connecting it back to the gauge by turning the cable from where it connects to the transmission and it works. but when i connect it completely and drive I don't get anything. i got the speedo cable from the guy i bought the car from. i dont know much about transmissions. thanks for the help.

Is there a gear on the transmission side? If there's no speedo gear, it's not going to do anything.

Your speedometer gear in your tranny is shot.

Soaring is right...there is a gear on the end of the cable as well as on the tailshaft of the tranny. If either of these are bad...no cable rotation.

There should be a nut you can loose and take the speedo gear out. Then just replace it. If not, then you have a different tranny than mine.

ok, so i called my local classic mustang store to get a new gear, (this shows how much i know). i give them my specs and since i have 4.56 gears in my pony, i have to find a gear reducer or the drive gear will just get shreaded. i have called a place in FLA. and looked on ebay and searched the web. the buy i talked to in FLA said they probably run about 550-750 bucks, is this right? thanks for any help again.

You shouldn't pay more than 20 bucks for the set. If you look under the car there should be a bolt holding the driven gear in the tranny. (Right where the cable goes in.) If you have to replace the drive gear (the one on the tailshaft) there should be four bolts holding the tailshaft on. Once you take the driveshaft out and those four bolts the tailshaft will come off. Then the drive gear is held on with a clip usually and just slides right off. Just make sure you have a small pan to catch the fluid and you are good. You won't loose much. Let us know how it comes out.
