C3 / C4 / T5, I am getting confused!
Hi,
I am about to have my automatic transmission swapped for a Tremec T5 in a couple of days and have some questions.
1/ I have an automatic 3-speed transmission on my 1967 A-code 289 and always called it a C3. I recently realized that it may be a C4... Is that true? What's the difference between the two?
2/ I am going to have it done by a local shop with pretty good reviews. I got a quote on the phone when I asked for a "C3 to T5 swap", part (T5 will be new) and labor for $3500. Assuming I have a C4, would it make it cheaper?
Thanks a lot, cannot wait to stick shift in my car

RE: C3 / C4 / T5, I am getting confused!
Ford did make a C3 automatic transmission, but if your transmission is the correct auto for your car it should be a C4. There should be no reason the swap should be more or less if you had a C3 or a C4. All the existing trans parts will be gutted and replaced either way. The one exception would be if by chance the drive shaft didn't have to be modified, but I am guessing that the driveshaft will be modified either way.
Hope this helps.

I have never heard of a C3. The auto trannys are c4 or c6 or AOD in the 80s when they went to overdrive. Both c4 and c6 were three speeds, also called cruise-o-matics. The c6 was generally for big blocks and later model Fords because they have bigger innards. The down side to c6 is they have more power loss than the c4s so some drag racers use the smaller c4.

the C4 is just a model designation...nothing to do with the number of gears. That is most likely what you have.
btw Tremec is not t5...which are you getting?
if its a t5, which one? There are different gear ratios for different t5's.

Thanks! As usual, fast and precise answers
Well, I don't exactly know what I am going to get... I remember asking what kind of transmission and he told me that it would be a "brand new T5". I will see that with him in a couple of days.
Does the price sound right to you?

I cant help with the pricing, sorry!
The job is not particularly difficult, but there is a fair bit of work involved. Remember you have to add a clutch as well as the mechanism to operate it (an extra pedal plus the hydraulic or cable)
I suggest you read some on the swap in the FAQ section.
I would want to know exactly which t5 because the ratios determine your driveability. If the rear on your car is stock, it could well be 3.00 or 2.80.
If you have a 5th gear at/ around 0.68 that makes for very low revs in 5th. Not a problem for a high torque engine but you may not like it for a stock 302.

Tremec made T5's after they bought out Borg Warner iirc. So it depends on what year it is, but they're basically the same transmission aside from some design differences in gear ratios, synchros etc from WC to NWC.

c3 is a ford tranny behind some smaller 4cylinders i believe. the c4 is a common auto the c5 is a metric version of the c4 with a lockup torque converter
