You might want to check in the truck for a firewall that seperates if the gas tank and the car(if im not mistaken the older mustangs do not have a firewall in the trunk,please correct me if im wrong)

p.s i think you should be able to find out if you look under the trunk carpet(again if anything knows anymore about this than i do please say something)I felt like i needed to say something.

first thing check for rust. look for rust in the floor pans. look for a rusted out leaking cowel.(The cowel is the air intake for the cab at the base of the wind shield) to check is if the cowel leaks. pore a gallon of water in to it and see if it drains in to the car. These cars can have rust all over the place so that is a big thing to look for. that should give you some things to start with I am sure you will get more posts on the subject
