It maybe that your pump nozzle in the carb is to small. I think when upgrading nozzle size you want to jump two units at a time. So for example if your nozzle size is 35, you would upgrade to a 37.

Hey guys,

First post here. Seems like there are alot of 71-73 guys here. Clevelands like alot of initial timing and a larger than normal pump shot. I'd run 12 initial and up the shooter to a 35 and see what happens. Of course you have to make sure you have the basics covered first. Float level set properly, no vacuum leaks, plenty of fuel at no more than 5-7 psi. Hope this helps.

Yeah, sounds like too thin of a pump shot and too lean up top maybe. Get the secondary spring tuning kit and the accelerator pump cam kit, if you don't already have them. You'll need those for throttle response tuning. Also check the plugs to see if you're rich/lean, you may need to jet it. Ignition timing has to be accurate though, otherwise anything you do to the carb is wasted effort.

Well, it's not going to run right until the engine is completely warmed up. That's just how carburetors are, they need to be tuned for the engine when fully warm, and will be too lean when cold.
