Put it in park

fiddling with the wires in the shifter is a sure fire way to muck up the neutral safety

This is a link to the 1970 wiring diagram you can download. You can confirm your wiring at the selonoid

So now the truth comes out! You never said anything about the neutral safety switch. I would just by pass it temporarily to see if that is the problem.

Hiya,

what you have (currently) is the following:
a) no key in ignition and screwdriver trick -> engine turns (fan spinning) but engine will not run
b) key in ignition postion (not start position) and screwdriver trick: does the engine start ?
if it does the same thing as in a) engine turns over but doesn't start, then you have no 12V+ coming from the ignition key to the starter relais.
The most common problem is the neutral safety switch.

if you disconnect the neutral safety switch I belive you should have a connector there. Is this connector 1 pin or 2 pin (how many cables go into this connector?) Let me know and I'll tyell you on how to bypass.

yes i have a fealing that i have narrowed it down to that now. ive replaced 2 of the 3 that i thought it was. so what do you want me to find on it? i believe there is 4-5 wires that come thru the floor and into the shifter. ill go check. do i just disconnect it?
