The 1801 is probably what I would want as well. I have heard that the Thunder Series is a much better carb than the Performer, and I am a fan of the Performer....

RE: in need of advice
when the car is dying on a red light but not when idling in front of your house then I guess you have power assisted brakes?
If yes, you might just have a vacuum leak. spray some WD-40 when car is idling around the hose going from intake manifold to power assist.
spray some around your intake manifold (not into air cleaner). if the idle rpm changes you have a leak and that's your problem. not the carb
but I guess yes impulse buying is hard to come by. But check if there other issues first (like the intake leak) as otherwise you;ll have the same prob with a new carb

at the same time your choke isn't hooked up, the heat riser is missing. I guess you have headers.
check if the throttle plate (the upper butterfly) is fully open when the car is warm
