Intake/carb help
I'm not a carb guy really, so I turn to the pro's here. My neighbor has a 67 that he restored, and the only thing he neglected really was the engine. Stock 289, original intake and carb. Needless to say, it has it's troubles running. It likes to stall, can't really break the tires free... Just not good performance. He's lookin to upgrade to something new and is enlisting my help in finding the right combo. I figured something like an Edelbrock low rise with a 650 on top, but I'm not sure if a 650 will be a bit much for a bone stock 289.
Any thoughts on a quick combo we can slap on and go? Money really isn't an object, but we're also not looking to spend crazy money on a ridiculous combo that's too much for the goals. Maybe something with a little room to grow incase I convince him to up the power

Edelbrock Performer RPM Air Gap + 1" Wilson Tapered 4-hole spacer + Holley Ultra Performer 570cfm + K&N Xstream
THAT is a perfect combo for a 289.
He should also invest in a nice cam and long tube headers to start.
That should help that 289 pump out a few more ponies.

Hey just did a carb & intake on my 67 . Used Performer intake with a 500 CFM Eddy. It had a stock intake with a 600 Eddy that ran very rich ,ruff idle poor gas mileage put at high RPM ran great . With the stock motor and the 500 CFM I got way more tunable and just a better driver I can only feel a little drop of performance at higher speeds. Check out my other tread in the general discussion section on on my changing of the intake.

Take your distributor to a shop that can put it on the machine and adjust both advances to 4V specifications. I guarantee the advance is out of whack, now, killing your performance. The distributor should be adjusted anyway, I've done these and I've never seen one that was right. Use 4V (or BOSS 302, if you've upgraded the engine) specifications. Not expensive, and the difference is usually dramatic. If you can't find a local shop that does these, you can send it to Glazier/Nolan.

I agree, a Performer RPM and 500 cfm carb. Any larger carb is too much for a stock 289.

My choosing of the 570cfm is based on that he wants to upgrade all the bolt on parts that he can, intake, spacer, long tubes with larger exhaust, cam and pulling to 6500rpms.
Money is no object and it sounds like he doesnt care about staying stock so upgrading these parts should be no problem.
That would put him pretty close to the 570cfm rating according to a carb sizing calc that I use. The calc I use says 516cfm on a mild 289 that pulls to 6500rpms. The Performer RPM makes power till 6500rpms and matching a cam to that should be easy.
The Avenger series is a great carb series and works well even on overcarbed aps, I have used them several times and like them quite a bit. Its only about 50cfm too much.
