Default Stearter problem---HELP!!!

Pulled the starter tonight and it seems to have fixed the probelm ---kinda. Is there a spacer between the starter and the bellhousing mount, becuase on ours there isnt one and the starter isnt mounting flush like it should!! Its about 1/8 inch from the bellhousing, and the flange doesnt go into the housing hole.

i have a spacer/adapter on my 408 but it is an aftermarket starter motor. cant remember on the Mustang but pretty sure there isnt one for the stock ford starter.

If you need a spacer and there wasnt one, you could jam the ring gears.

What exactly is the problem with the starter?

There is little ring and cup on the shaft between the starter gear (bendix) and the end fitting that have come loose. The starter was jamming on the son to begin with and now this new little problem. There also seems to be a snap ring missing that is supposed to keep that little cup and ring in place. The new starter has the snap ring, but again its notgoing flush with the mount. Maybe I have the wrong starter.

Yep, I think you have the wrong starter....

We had this issue with a "mini starter" I bought off of ebay,,, I had to make it fit, and then it didn't work anyway, ground like hell.... Went to autozone and bought a $30.00 replacement,,, it works great!!

(anyone need a Ford ministarter that I don't know what it fits?)

GOT IT FIXED!! Turns out that a manual transmission starter has a 4.125 inch diameter flange that is supposed slip into a 4.080 inch diameter hole on the Engine-to-bellhousing plate. If my math is correct, then the manual starter flange is .050 inch to big in diameter. The starter we had (both old and new) had the 4.125 inch diameter flange. Checking all the starters at Autozone we found that an automatic transmission starter has the required 4.080 inch diameter flange. That was the ony difference between the maunal and automatic starters, everything else is the same.Exchanged the 2 starters out and voila....it fit and everything works!!
